The Koinonia Action for Peace (KAP) is a new initiative launched by Koinonia Community to promote sustainable peace in various informal settlements and grassroots communities in Kenya. KAP was conceived with the aim of reducing the various forms of conflict among groups and communities that have been marginalized by socio-economic, political and cultural barriers.

The initiative presents a unique platform for different grassroots organizations, including faith based organizations, youth groups, NGOs and cultural organizations to come together, mobilizing their diverse ideas, resources, networks and human assets for a more effective approach to peace building. This strategy provides a consultative and united approach to the achievement of sustainable peace.

KAP’s initial focus is on Kibera, a big informal settlement in Nairobi with an estimated population of between 500,000 and 800,000 people from different ethnic and cultural communities, religious identities and political affiliations. Kibera is conflict-prone area, and over the years, ethnic, political, and economic violence have become common in the slum. Kenya’s 2008 post election violence was a clear testament; Kibera experienced the harshest incidences of violence, and a substantial proportion of the thousands who died hailed from the slum.

KAP’s mandate under the Koinonia Community allows it to coordinate projects and activities both within and outside Nairobi. We have realized an increasing need to extend our networks beyond Nairobi to galvanize similar projects in different parts of the country, all working towards national healing. KAP therefore seeks to develop local, regional and international partnerships that will expand its capacity to achieve fully sustainable peace building operations in the various provinces of Kenya.
